Core Memory Principles

Association

Our brains naturally connect thoughts. A single concept triggers related memories, creating neural pathways that make new information easier to remember when linked to existing knowledge.

Visual Thinking

We think in images, not words. The brain processes visual information more efficiently, making mental imagery the most powerful tool for memory retention and recall.

Absurdity & Emotion

Bizarre, exaggerated, and emotionally charged images capture attention and stick in memory. The more unusual the association, the stronger the memory trace.

The SMEAR Principle

S - Senses

Engage all five senses in your mental images. Add color, texture, sound, smell, and taste to create multi-sensory associations that anchor memories more deeply.

M - Motion

Moving images are more memorable than static ones. Add action, rhythm, and dynamism to your mental scenes to increase their stickiness.

E - Exaggeration

Make things impossibly large, small, numerous, or intense. Extreme size, quantity, or intensity grabs attention and creates memorable impressions.

A - Absurdity

Create ridiculous, humorous, or impossible scenarios. The brain naturally remembers things that break expectations or normal patterns.

R - Replacement

Use objects in unexpected ways. When something serves a purpose it wasn't designed for, it creates cognitive dissonance that strengthens memory.

The Major System Code

The Major System converts numbers into consonant sounds, which then become words and images. Here's the basic code:

Number to Consonant Mapping:

0 = S, Z
1 = T, D
2 = N
3 = M
4 = R
5 = L
6 = SH, CH, J, soft G
7 = K, hard G, Q
8 = F, V
9 = P, B

Memory Aids:

0 = "Zero" starts with Z
1 = "T" has one downstroke
2 = "N" has two downstrokes
3 = "M" has three downstrokes
4 = "R" is last letter of "four"
5 = "L" in Roman numerals is 50
6 = "J" looks like inverted 6
7 = "K" can be drawn from 7
8 = "F" in cursive looks like 8
9 = "P" looks like inverted 9

Examples from the Book:

Number Major System Word Image Example Usage
1 TEA Teabag or cup of tea Memorizing the first item in a list
15 TAIL Animal's tail Remembering number sequences
42 RAIN Rain falling Memory palace locations
73 COMB Hair comb Binary number conversions
99 BABY Baby or infant Dates and years

Practical Applications

Phone Numbers

Convert phone numbers into vivid images. For example, (555) 123-4567 becomes "Lily-Tea-Nun-Rail-Lash-Chick" creating a memorable story.

Dates & Years

Memorize historical dates, birthdays, and anniversaries. 1947 becomes "Tap-Rack" – imagine a water tap on a storage rack.

Playing Cards

Modified Major System for cards: Spades=S, Hearts=H, Clubs=C/K, Diamonds=D. Ace of Spades = "Suit", 7 of Hearts = "Hockey".

Passwords

Remember complex passwords by converting characters into shapes and sounds. "9A5>j1H(#|" becomes a sequence of memorable images.

Binary Numbers

Group binary digits (3, 4, or 5 at a time) into decimal numbers, then apply the Major System. Perfect for tech professionals and students.

Lists & Procedures

Remember recipes, instructions, or step-by-step processes by converting each step into a Major System image and creating a story.
