Neurochemicals have become somewhat popular in recent times. Almost everyone has heard about dopamine. Perhaps we might loosely associate it with pleasure, video games, relationships, gambling, etc. I once saw a Venn diagram showing the different neurochemicals and read an ebook on mastering your happy chemicals. I cannot quite recall the name of the book or the author. That was many years ago, and I was always reading something. I do remember "happy chemicals" in the title of the ebook, however. So let's take a look at what some neurochemicals are associated with and try to memorize what the neurochemicals dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine do and A for.
Dopamine: Alertness Pleasure Reward Motivation Euphoria
Serotonin Well-being pleasure relaxation contentment positivity
Norepinephrine focus fight or flight arousal memory retrieval
I'll be using my recorded memory palace from the Serpentine galary[https://youtu.be/6BsKqLI7LdA] to store the info.
In the first location I will use the image of a giant syringe spilling out drops of liquid onto an eye.
This syringe reminds me of dopamine (as in doping) and the eye reminds me of alertness.
In the second location, I imagine throwing mushy chocolate cake at a shiny golden trophy. So the chocolate cake will represent pleasure and the trophy will represent reward.
In this location. I will imagine soldiers (motivation) dancing (euphoria). This reminds me that dopamine is also involved in motivation and euphoria!
Now let's move on to serotonin.
Here I need an image for serotonin. Kind of sounds like Sea-row-tonin. The first image that comes to my mind is a seahorse with a rowing paddle. This should be enough to remember the word.
Now I need an image for well-being. So maybe I could use someone meditating? Doing breathwork?
So I could imagine a seahorse rowing down the wall on a small boat carrying a group of meditators.
To remember pleasure and relaxation, I could imagine Just a giant chocolate bar (pleasure), melting on a rocking chair (relaxation)
To remember contentment and positivity, I could imagine a sleeping, smiling cat (contentment) with shining sun rays (positivity).
Now for norepinephrine:
This word is more complex. So perhaps I will use this one location to store it. Norepinephrine kind of sounds like nob, pin, eve, run.
So perhaps think of Eve wearing a doorknob hat with pins running towards the barrier.
So now we move on to the broomstick and we imagine we have to memorize focus and "fight or flight." So here I might imagine a giant magnifying glass focusing light onto the broomstick that has a boxing glove attached on top of it!
So now I have to pick an image for arousal. I'm thinking "electricity," since it jolts people awake or arouses them. It's also been used in resuscitation procedures to wake people who are drifting into potentially fatal unconsciousness. Electricity was used to make the muscles of a frog twitch. But electricity is too generic. So maybe I use a battery.
So imagine a battery in the bin leaking with acid on top of a brain. See the sides of the trashcan somewhat melting away.
This should remind me of arousal (battery) and memory retrieval (brain).
Now it's just a matter of recalling the information by going on a mental trip through my locations.
